The Palestinian Jihadist Consensus

Palestinian society is unique in that there is a Jihadist consensus throughout society involving both secularists and Islamists. Jihadist indoctrination permeates Palestinian society not only in the the Islamist-run Gaza but also in Judea and Samaria where the media and the system of education propagandize Jihadism and idolize Jihadist terrorists. The al-Aqsa Martyrs’ Brigades, the armed wing of the Fatah party is the world’s only non-Islamist Jihadist terrorist organization responsible for dozens of non-Islamist Jihadist suicide bombings in the name of Islam against innocent Jewish civilians.

There is a consensus connecting Palestinian terrorists with Islam and supporting the release of jailed Palestinian terrorists is one thing of absolute consensus within Palestinian society. There is a consensus that murdering Jewish civilians constitutes “a legitimate struggle” and this is generally also legitimized in religious terms.

Furthermore, when Palestinian Israeli rioters in May 2021 burned synagogues in the Israeli mixed Jewish-Arab city of Lod was there almost no condemnation from within Palestinian Israeli society. While there was wide Jewish Israeli condemnation of the Jewish Israeli rioters and lych mobs was there very little Palestinian Israeli condemination of the Palestinian Israeli rioters and lynch mobs. Has the Palestinian Jihadist consensensus began to extend into Israel’s Palestinian community? There are worrying signs.

The Palestinian case shows that Islamism and Jihadism are discrete phenomena albeit usually overlapping yet not alway so.
