The nation of Israel faces a looming political war between two democratically illegitimate entities. One which has almost destroyed democracy and turned it into puppet theater and one that seeks to destroy what is left through ”Hungarization”. Neither of the two camps are the good guys. Nor is the opposition in the Knesset good guys either since they too are part of the farcical puppet show of the Israeli Deep State.
In order to restore liberal democracy in Israel, a constitutional revolution is required. The nation needs a constitution and the Deep State must be dismantled and replaced with a German-style transparent Office for the Protection of the Constitution. The current Supreme Court needs to be replaced with a body that are not puppets of a clandestine intelligence agency. A mechanism needs to be found for electing justices without politicizing the process and substance such as happened in the US.
The problem is that neither the government with its ambitions to turn Israel into a second Hungary, i.e. an ”illiberal democracy”, meaning yet another liberal democracy in decline, nor the power-hungry Deep State appears ready to give in. There is a compromise at hand and that is the restoration of liberal democracy with strong institutional safeguards to protect the new constitution. The only question is whether the two parties to the conflict are ready for a solution and mutual compromise as part of the writing of the constitution? Yet both sides need to be aware that the other side is perfectly capable of mounting a coup d’état against the other.
The Deep State cannot allow the turning of Israel into a second Hungary. The government cannot allow the Deep State and its intelligence puppet theater to remain in power. The compromise is a constitutional process leading to the drafting of a constitution.
The Deep State would be particularly well advised to stay strong against ”Hungarization”, sponsor a process for the drafting of a constitution leading to an actual constitution, help establish an Office for the Protection of the Constitution and when all is said and done the Deep State must dissolve itself.
