Germany’s “Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution” (BfV) and its state affiliates, one in each of Germany’s federal states are internationally unique but it is in fact a scandal that not every liberal democracy has its own Office for the Protection of the Constitution. The BfV is a domestic intelligence agency tasked with guarding liberal democracy against its enemies, particularly advocates of totalitarian ideologies such as Nazism and Islamism. All liberal democracies should institute their respective Office for the Protection of the Constitution which should be united in an International Office to Guard Democracy against its Enemies, an international intelligence organization of cooperation between the various “offices” in different countries. The past two decades has seen a significant regression in democratization and it is therefore essential to halt this international trend.
