Some wars are not existential, others are. Why is it that NATO does not deter Russia considering Russia’s plans for conquering the European Union? The answer is that the Chinese threat trumps Western defenses. The entire Russia outside of the major cities is thinly populated and thus suitable for Han (Sinitic, ethnically Chinese) colonization. This makes Russia’s war in Ukraine and by extension its planned war against the European Union existential in character from a Russian perspective. The Chinese threat is emerging and growing as Beijing builds up its military to prepare for world conquest. Russia must conquer Europe or else be conquered by China as Russia seeks to turn European wealth and demography into Russian military muscles to be used to defend Russia against China. European Union member states must internalize that by historically rejecting Putin’s bid for membership in NATO did the EU strike fear in the Russian soul and made themselves a target in existential warfare. This is why the West needs to correct itself, recognize Russian eligibility for membership in NATO and the EU in principle as a European power and thus commence a Russian process of democratization and liberalization in order to make Russia an applicant for membership in the West. This will end the Russian threat against Europe and require Europe to defend Russia against China.
