Peace in Lebanon

The current Lebanese government is actively interested in peace with Israel and that is certainly a good thing. However as the Syrian Salafi regime has experienced, peace nowadays will be on Israel’s terms. In order to make peace with Israel – Damascus and Beirut will need to embrace federalism which proved very helpful in promoting liberal democracy in Germany after its defeat in WWII. Regions should be aimed at establishing self-determination within Lebanon for Lebanon’s strong ethno-religious communities while abandoning the sectarian political and electoral system in favor of freedom and representative government. This is a powerful American interests which will bring peace between Israel and Lebanon and stabilize Lebanon itself.
