Is federalism in Syria an American interest? Yes, because any absence of federalism will be synonymous with instability. Syria is highly multiethnic and not much more than half of the population belongs to the Sunni Arab majority. The current regime represents almost exclusively Sunni Arabs to the exclusion of everyone else. Furthermore, there is danger of genocide against minorities as seen against the Druze – and the Kurds cannot be considered safe under Jihadi rule considering the deep animus of Syrian Sunni Arabs against Syrian Kurds. Anyone sowing ethnic domination in Syria will harvest instability. Instability does not need to be encouraged and Israel will only intervene to prevent genocide. The abandonment of the SDF is contrary to American interests, especially considering that the Kurds are highly friendly to the United States. Other allies in Islamdom will watch, calculate and wonder if they too would be sold out to Islamist adversaries?
