Arming America’s Kurdish Allies

The AANES (Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria) and the KRG (Kurdistan Regional Government) of northern Iraq suffer from hostility from regional Islamist powers. Islamist Turkey is implacably hostile to the AANES and frequently attacks northeast Syria from the the air despite the SDF/YPG never having ever launched a single attack against Turkish territory and the KRG lives under constant fear of aggression from Islamist Iran and its Iraqi proxies. Yet the AANES and the KRG have so far largely been denied heavy weapons by the US. Israel is incapable of directly supplying weapons to the KRG and the AANES due to lack of geographic access but the US could and should do so. Israel can and should however assist the KRG and the AANES in setting up their own domestic arms industry and should encourage the KRG and the AANES to actively collaborate with each other in this effort. The KRG and the AANES should, if possible, be supplied with modern tanks, modern artillery and advanced drones, all made in the United States. Strengthening America’s Kurdish allies will strategically strengthen joint American and Israeli strategic interests in the region and reversely strategically weaken the hostile Iran-Syria regional axis. Furthermore, arming the Kurds with heavy weapons will have a stabilizing effect on the entire region.
