The Threat of Islamist Takeover in Turkey

If the Islamists were to fully take control over the Republic of Turkey would this have severe geostrategic implications. This would mean that the Islamists would control the Turkish Straits (the Dardanelles and the Bosporus) and thus naval transits between the Mediterranean Sea and the Black Sea. An Islamist Turkey would no doubt exit the North Atlantic Treaty Organization and would most likely commence its own nuclear weapons program following in the footsteps of Islamist Iran. An Islamist Turkey would be far more aggressive in its regional expansionist activities as unconstrainstrained by the Dönmeh-led Derin Devlet (Turkish for ‘Deep State’).

Sharia law would likely not be immediately implemented in keeping with the gradualist Islamization approach of the Muslim Brotherhood but the status of women would probably be constrained as seen in Muslim Brotherhood controlled Gaza. Elections may however be abolished in an Islamist Turkey. The AKP would probably not wait with restoring the Caliphate (Turkey was the country of the last caliphate, abolished in 1924) in most likely crowning Mr. Erdogan as the new caliph.

An Islamist Turkey would no doubt become a regional Jihadist threat on the Iranian model only in this case located on the very threshold of Europe. This process has already commenced with Turkey’s very ambitious post-Kemalist regional ambitions and support for Jihadists beyond its borders.

The Islamist takeover is very unlikely to take the shape of a sudden eruption of power but will most likely continue as an insidious process as designed to achieve gradual Islamization.

It is clear that the Derin Devlet has been on the losing end of this process for the past two decades now and clearly needs international intelligence assistance in its covert domestic intelligence warfare with the Crypto-Islamist AKP, the Turkish branch of the Muslim Brotherhood. The global intelligence community would be particularly well-advised to lend substantial assistance through intelligence sharing and otherwise through joint and separate intelligence operations on Turkish soil to ensure that the Derin Devlet regains exclusive control over the Republic of Turkey and ousts the Islamists from power.
