Israel’s minister of justice Yariv Levin now claims that the government is no longer obliged to obey the Supreme Court. If so, why should the IDF any longer be obliged to obey the government? Israeli liberal democracy has long been teetering towards the abyss by courting the very enemies of open society who seek to dismantle it and replace it with a halakhic state. A compromise appears out of question and is nevertheless not desirable since it is goes in the wrong direction in weakening Israel’s juristocracy and so a military coup is the only way to resolve a constitutional standoff between the government and the Supreme Court and hence draft a constitution for the first time.
