A government half whose parliamentary base is made up of anti-democratic political parties cannot be trusted. This is one reason why I believe Israel’s liberal democracy has come to the end of the line and the country needs a more liberal but less democratic form of government. There are several more reasons for this:
- Israel needs to coercively integrate its Haredi minority while respecting their culture and religious beliefs before they become too unmanageable in demographic terms.
- Israel needs to impose gender equality on its Arab minority so as to integrate Arab women in the labor market.
- Median Jewish mass immigration means tremendous challenges in the coming decades and so Israel cannot afford to subsidize non-working able-bodied freeloaders whether Haredi men or Arab women.
- Israel needs to implement an authoritarian liberal revolution as part of the effort to make the country attractive for Western Aliyah, including for patrilineal American Reform Jews.
- Israel needs a new constitution that will last for the long term including for preserving democracy when Haredim become the majority.
- Israel needs a new constitution and a new form of government in place before the Northern War erupts. Why? Because the Northern War will test national cohesion and will be difficult to complete under a regime of liberal democracy.
Israel’s new constitution needs to define the country as a Jewish and Liberal state as opposed to a Jewish and Democratic state.
