Democracies should be looking out for each other whether the threats are internal or external. There is nothing exceptional about a government in a liberal democracy appointing judges to the supreme court, the problem is that the Israeli government intended to politicize the high court in its own favor. Of course, judicial review is not necessarily a feature of liberal democracy but Israel does not have a constitution and so removing judicial review would dangerously concentrate all powers in the hands of the government. That is what is wrong with the judicial overhaul as proposed by the Netanyahu government. Therefore the US government and the European Commission have certainly been right in showing the Israeli government ”tough love”. This is certainly not undue interference in internal Israeli affairs as the Israeli government claims. When democracy is at stake you take off the gloves.
