In May 2021 there was an eleven-day long conflict between Israel and Gaza. The conflict was put an end to very early by US president Joe Biden who pressured Israel into a premature ceasefire. At the time I did not believe that 11 days of pounding terrorist infrastructure was enough to create sufficient deterrence so I was very surprised by the ensuing calm for most of the subsequent two years. I was also always wondering why the Jihadist organizations in Gaza rarely broke the border fence and infiltrated into Israel. Alas, I didn’t draw the right conclusions. Now we know the truth, Hamas was pretending to be deterred in order to become able to catch the Israelis off guard and launch a terrorist mega-operation inside Israel.
Now to regional reality, Iran has long been building terrorist infrastructures in the region that pose an increasingly severe threat against the Jewish state. Israeli strategists have known for long that these infrastructures will at some point have to be fully dismantled. It is obvious that the time for liberating Gaza from its ruling kleptocratic Jihadist thugs has arrived. If President Biden is serious about fully supporting Israel in the aftermath of the October 7, 2023 mass terrorist attack as he has indeed indicated, then he must support Israel’s liberation of Gaza. There is however another dimension to this. When America stands with Israel does American deterrence improve and vice versa. This is because of the logic of honor culture in the Greater Middle East. When America does not stand with its primary ally Israel does America itself appear weak and dishonorable. This is extremely relevant to the question of American deterrence vis-a-vis planned Iranian biological mass terrorist attacks against major American cities. Standing with Israel strengthens America and reinforces American national security.
