The 28 point plan has its own logic and its hoped-for consequences would appear to be in some ways consistent with American interests. However, this is not so simple as it would appear from the perspective of the current American administration. Washington wants peace at literally any price and does not take European interests into the calculus which is a mistake of enormous proportions detrimental to American interests as I shall elaborate on.
As long as Russia is preoccupied in Ukraine there is no risk of WWIII. However, Moscow strongly intends to launch WWIII in Europe and the notion that appeasing Putin will avert WWIII and bring Russia into the US alliance system is simply incorrect as the Americans are apparently being duped by their Russian counterparts. The notion that what might superficially appear as personal trust between presidents Putin and Trump will avert war in Europe is simply false. If you feed a crocodile he will attempt to consume you as well and President Putin precisely has the personality of a crocodile. He lies calm in the waters but ultimately bits you and drags you down into the depths. Putin understands crude power and Putin must be defeated or else WWIII is next.
