Considering the illiberal leanings of the present Israeli government and its apparent lack of democratic instincts, it is imperative that the Israeli Deep State consistently and timely acts to protect Israel’s liberal character under all circumstances. The impending assault on the Law of Return is specifically not about preventing people with one Jewish grandparent in Russia and Ukraine from immigrating to Israel. Rather, the thinking of the Haredi rabbis who are pushing for this is long-term, namely to prevent immigration to Israel of millions of American patrilineal Reform Jews from the United States 15-20 years from now when Israel becomes economically attractive as a destination for Western immigration. The Israeli Deep State which appears to be predominantly or entirely national-religious, should lobby Religious-Zionist poskim and other leading Religious-Zionist rabbis for an entirely different approach to conversions.
- Mass conversions to Judaism have occurred previously in Jewish history and this should be done once more.
- Bar Mitzvah and Bat Mitzvah conversions would ensure that the new generations become Jewish.
- Olim chadashim who are not halakhically Jewish should be automatically converted as part of the absorption process as practiced by rabbi Ovadia Yosef.
The Israeli Deep State should act now and henceforth with massive power to prevent any changes to the Law of Return and should already now prepare changing the system of conversion to Judaism once this becomes possible.
