America’s policy towards Israel for most of the past half century has been based on reining in Israel’s political power while enhancing only Israel’s military power in terms of purchase of American military hardware. President Trump made great strides towards changing this policy during his first administration and his second term offers the opportunity to strengthen American interests and influence in the greater region even further by making a clean break with the policy of reining in Israel. America needs to partner with Israel in more respects rather than reining it in. One of those respects relates to setting Israel’s borders in Judea and Samaria and applying sovereignty over its own historical lands. Contrary to what the Biden administration presumed would that not harm American power and reputation in the region but rather strengthen it by extracting a sharp thorn and for the most part removing the Anti-American Palestinians from the regional equation. Israel needs to apply sovereignty with an understanding that its American strategic partner will immediately internationally recognize this act of sovereign power. This will impress the Saudis who will give up their dangerous demands for a Palestinian state that would pose a most severe threat against Israeli security and thus weaken America in the greater region by weakening Israel. Making Israel great will in contrast make America great in the wider region by clarifying to everyone in the greater region that America cannot be taken for granted.
