Iran was thoroughly Westernized during the reign of the last Shah and Iran remains a sophisticated state adept at communicating with other cultures and fooling their diplomats. For example, did Iranian diplomats astonishingly succeed years ago in convincing Chinese diplomats that Iran ostensibly does not intend to destroy Israel despite constantly declaring the intention to do so.
There are 1.9 billion Muslims in the world and the Khomeinist vision is the to create an Islamist Superstate under the leadership of Tehran as encompassing the entire Islamdom. Such a totalitarian theocratic state would be the world’s only superpower, the world’s hegemon. Western powers are generally interested in seeking coexistence with Islam and Islamdom. The Iranian leadership laughs at such ridiculous ambitions. For them is it solely a matter of domination and hegemony. There can be religious coexistence but solely under Twelver Shia Islamist sharia rule.
