Israel Too Wants to Survive

Last year an Anti-Semite was elected president of Chile. The same thing could happen in the United States. Gone are the days when it was assured that it would always be a moderate who would be elected president of the United States. Support for Israel is declining dangerously among young Americans, including among young Republicans and young Evangelicals. Don’t get me wrong, Israel never took American support for Israel for granted, but the possibility that an Anti-Semite whether a rightwing populist or a leftwing Anti-Zionist would be elected president is something that increasingly is in the realm of the possible. 

Of course, the immigration of tens of millions of Median Jews will allow Israel to redeem and enfranchise the entire Judea and Samaria and for Jordan to subsequently annex Gaza with an underground road and railroad connection under the Israeli Negev Desert between the East Bank and Gaza. This will do much to resolve and alleviate the Israeli-Palestinian dispute but Anti-Zionist efforts to destroy Israel will no doubt continue regardless. 

While there is no question that most Israeli citizens irrespective of religion sympathize with the people of Ukraine, it would not help Ukraine the slightest if Israel were to ruin its relations with Russia but it would be an immense strategic blow to Israel. In fact, Israel’s relations with Russia and China are vital as Israel needs alternatives as great power allies with veto power in the United Nations Security Council in the event that an Anti-Semitic future American president were to abandon Israel. It certainly appears that Israeli diplomats have not explained this complex reality to their Ukrainian interlocutors. Israel should however intensify its diplomatic efforts to end the war in Ukraine, something which would facilitate reconciliation between the United States and Russia and an encircling alignment against China. Turkey and Israel both have a vested interest in resolving the conflict in Ukraine since neither nation wants to see China expand to the eastern shores of the Mediterranean Sea.
