Arming the SDF with Heavy Weapons will Shorten Israel’s Next War

The main problem with a joint IDF-SDF strategic operation in Syria and Lebanon following Hezbollah’s upcoming massive missile assault on urban Israel will be the slow pace of the advancement of the SDF (Syrian Democratic Forces) due to its lack of heavy weapons, particularly tanks and artillery. While the SDF is highly motivated and the SAA (Syrian Arab Army) is not, aerial support has its limits despite the vast firepower and aerial supremacy of the IAF (Israeli Air Force).

If the United States were to equip the SDF with heavy weapons would that substantially shorten the coming war next year in Syria as well as shorten Israel’s occupation of Lebanon.

A joint IDF-SDF strategic operation in Syria and Lebanon would involve Israel establishing an Aramean Christian state and annexing Median Jewish (Alawite and Druze) regions of Syria and Lebanon while the new PYD (Democratic Union Party) government in Damascus as installed by the SDF would annex the remainder of Lebanon.

What would be the course of the war? The IDF (Israel Defense Forces) would initially invade and occupy Lebanon in order to root out Hezbollah and its extensive military tunnel system. Its 150 000 rocket/missile stockpile would already be spent to destroy a significant amount of urban Israel, including Tel Aviv, Israel’s economic capital. The SDF would first cross the Euphrates to take the southern bank of the river from the SAA. This would involve the IAF bombing SAA positions and giving the SDF aerial support. Second would the SDF move towards Aleppo and then march southwards towards Hama and Homs and ultimately towards Damascus. How long will this take? Probably months. However, with modern tanks and artillery as supplied by the United States could the process be shortened substantially and so could the Israeli occupation of Lebanon also be shortened.

The United States Department of Defense needs to undertake an extensive study of the defense needs of the SDF and how the US can help shorten next year’s war in Syria and Lebanon, something which the US clearly will be keen on and is clearly perceived as a US interest. The US always wants to shorten Israel’s wars and here is an excellent opportunity in advance to shorten Israel’s next war.
