There are indications that there are negotiations between America and Saudi Arabia and so the question is what can be done to accelerate them? What are the stumbling blocks? The US government is likely making human rights related demands and MBS is probably reciprocating by lengthening his list of demands. The US government should consider that the leadership of the House of Saud has taken considerable risks by challenging and alienating the Islamists and hence the increased repression under the rule of MBS. Imagine that MBS would take a selective approach and be lenient towards liberals, pro-democrats and feminists. What would be the outcome? The agents of the Muslim Brotherhood would immediately take the opportunity to pretend to be liberals, pro-democrats and feminists and try to take over the country under false pretenses and hence MBS would have no choice but to implement precisely the present repressive policy. Imagine instead that MBS would democratize and allow everyone to voice their opinions and freely elect their representatives. What would be the outcome? The Islamists would simply take over power in the country. The US should challenge practices of systematic torture in the Kingdom but beyond that should avoid meddling into the KSA’s human rights practices simply because this is not in the interest of the United States. It is not in the interest of the US to undermine MBS just as it was not in the interest of the US to undermine the last Shah of Iran. While it is uncomfortable to advocate for a repressive government, it must be understood that MBS’ Ataturk-style regime of repressive liberalization is the only obstacle to Islamist takeover and so Israeli diplomats and American Jewish advocates need to better explain the necessary evils of MBS’ oppressive apparatus to the Biden administration. Furthermore, Israeli diplomats need to actively mediate negotiations between the KSA and the USA.
