Josep Borrell, the EU foreign affairs commissioner does not want to think in terms of Plan Bs. But how does he imagine that Iran would even have an incentive to negotiate without a Plan B and without an international community united around a Plan B as a strategic deterrence? When saying that he refuses to entertain Plan Bs is Borrell effectively sabotaging any prospects – however remote – for the resumption of negotiations. Borrell apparently does not understand the thinking in Tehran. Why does he think Tehran is racing towards nuclear threshold status while “deferring” participation in the Vienna “talks”? The Khomeinist regime is in an apocalyptic mood. It is heading towards major confrontation with the US and Israel and seems curiously indifferent to the fact that Israel will destroy its nuclear weapons program. Furthermore, Tehran is refusing to halt its advanced uranium enrichment program despite the apparent risk that the US will impose a no-fly zone over Iran after Israel destroys the Iranian nuclear weapons program, despite the obvious risk that this will lead to widespread armed uprisings in Iran’s ethnic periphery with US air support. In addition, Iran risks losing the western flank of its empire to Israel and the AANES (Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria) after Hezbollah attacks Israel and again the regime seems “indifferent”. This “indifferent”, apocalyptic regime is a highly dangerous one which may resort to the use of weapons of mass destruction. Josep Borrell and the world would be particularly well-advised to pay attention.
